Hello friends!  I can hardly believe that 2019 is upon us.  How crazy is that? I thought it’d be fitting to start the new year with something both delicious AND healthy, since I know that creating healthy habits is on a lot of people’s minds during this time of year.

funfetti vanilla cake with vanilla butter cream // aka the perfect birthday cake

Happy Happy New Year friends!

Honestly, I’m not too sad to see 2018 go, and am very much looking forward to 2019 being a fresh start! Resolution always seem to mean well, but I find they’re often too much pressure. And then you mess up and go…well, I guess I have to wait until next year to try again! So I’ve stopped making New Year’s Resolutions, but I do believe that it can be a useful time for reflection and goal planning. What do you want to do with your life? How can you move towards those goals in the next 365 days? Maybe that means making reasonable, bite-sized goals for each month, or chatting with friends to keep you accountable. Don’t feel like you have to change every thing in your life in all at once! Make small, sustainable changes, and go from there!

cranberry curd shortbread tart

I always feel like cranberries don’t get enough love when it comes to desserts, so this year I wanted to come up with a recipe where they were really the star of the show. So I whipped up some cranberry curd and paired it with a shortbread crust, for a simple, yet stunning tart. I topped it with a few sugared cranberries, rosemary, and meringues. Whipped cream would also be a great option if you don’t want to fuss with meringues! You can always use a star tip to pipe on whipped cream to make it look even fancier.

Add in a fresh baguette and some fancy crackers, and you’re all set.

Christmas cookie box // a Christmas baking round-up

For as long as I can remember, my mom has made a bunch of different kinds of Christmas cookies, barks, bars, etc, and packaged them up on plates for gifts! Most people these days don’t really need anything for Christmas, but homemade baking is always appreciated. You can never have too many cookies, right?

chocolate dipped candied oranges

Hey hey friends! I had several requests over on instagram to share my “recipe” for candied oranges, and I’m very pleased to inform you that it is one of the easiest things ever! Basically all we’re doing is boiling water and sugar together to make a syrup, and then throwing in the oranges slices in with it to get nice and soft and sweet. And yes, the peel becomes soft and sweet too, and is meant to be eaten along with the rest of the orange!

plum crumb pie (with cardamom)

Let’s first acknowledge the fact that it is no longer italian plum season. I know this, okay? I made this pie a couple months ago, and it got lost in the chaotic-ness that is my life during the Fall harvest season on our farm. But guess what? If you have frozen plums (kudos to you for thinking ahead!), they work perfectly! And you could also swap in red plums, which I’ve been seeing all over the grocery store in the past couple of weeks. Yay! Pluots would work well with this recipe as well. So many options!
